VERSIONS AND CONCESSIONS > ROAD-SIDE SHRINE
This monument, compared to the fragmentary state of the other Agora buildings, survives in an excellent condition. The unattested taenia, which is thought to have crowned the orthostatai, is not included in the representation, for it is considered that, at parts at least, the monument survives to its original height. Thus, its representation is rather straightforward. Because only the first phase of the monument has been recreated (3rd quarter of the 5th cent. BC), the representation comprises the bulge of the rock before its levelling and the addition of an earthen floor. The digital reconstruction was based on the drawings of the monument’s excavators [Shear, T.L. Jr., ‘The Athenian Agora: Excavations of 1971’, Hesperia 44 (1973), pp. 125-130, plates 25-28 and 360-369, plates 65-67].
