VERSIONS AND CONCESSIONS > TEMPLE OF HEPHAESTUS AND ATHENA ERGANE
The digital reconstruction of the best surviving monument of the Agora was unproblematic. Precisely because of its excellent condition (due to its conversion into a church in the Christian era), we have chosen this building for representation employing a three-dimensional graphic model and a photorealistic model. For the architectural aspect of the temple we have in general followed the suggestions included in H. Koch’s exhaustive study [Studien zu Theseustempel in Athen (Berlin, 1955)].

The sole difficulties are related to the three-dimensional representation of the ceiling’s coffers, where we broadly follow the recent conclusions of W.F. Jr. Wyatt and C.N. Edmonson [‘The Ceilings of the Hephaisteion’, AJA 88 (1984), p. 135ff.]. We represent a wooden ceiling in the interior of the cella, while the wing is formed by interlocking marble beams and coffered slabs. One particular difficulty pertains to the representation of the building’s sculptures. We have employed a combination of representations, using as a guide the drawings included in J. Boardman’s book [Ελληνική Πλαστική. Η Κλασική Περίοδος (Αθήνα 1999)].
